Costume, make up and hair for 'Hannah'

Before we filmed we took some photos of how we wanted 'Hannah' to look to signify to the audience Hannah's personality change.

Hair and Make-up

In the very first look, with Hannah's sweet and innocent personality. We used pinks and whites on her eyes to connote femininity. Additionally, the lack of make up signifies youth, that she is young and oblivious to the evil in the world. Her hair also down with soft curls at the end connotes that she is innocent and is a nice person, the curls are also bouncy and fresh which denotes her happy, and positive attitude she has. How her make up is stereotypical to how young teenage white girls would look.

However, we change her look once her personality changes...

In this look, we used a smokey eye effect, to connote the darkness she has around her. The blacks and greys connotes her soul, being dark and evil. The dark red lipstick, give off sexual connotations, which can be linked to Laura Mulvey's theory of the madonna/whore complex, in this case Hannah being the whore with the colour red, connoting passion, love, lust and even danger. The red also is a conventional colour in horror/thrillers which is the genre of our opening sequence. Her hair is slicked back away from her face which connotes the idea of maturity and confidence now, however we can also interpret slick backed hair as vulnerability of Hannah.

Costume

We chose Hannah to wear all white to connote her innocence and purity, as white is usually stereotypical for weddings to signify happiness, you can also interpret Hannah's white costume as freedom; that she is free and calm in the world. We chose a white tennis skirt as it looks like a school skirt,  which exaggerates how young she is. This whole outfit is to express her cleanliness and her personality which is resembled in the beginning of the opening sequence.

Hannah then has an outfit change...

Hannah's outfit now is all dark colours to match her make up. This all black outfit connotes her unstable emotions and her dark soul. Blacks has the connotations of death, hatred and emptiness which will represent her personality, that she has no emotion, she feels empty inside as if she is nothing. The jeans she is wearing now are much more masculine compared to the skirt before. Her outfit now is a symbol for her new persona, the dramatic in change look signifies that something dramatic happened in her life to change her, which is left to the audience to find out, meaning we used Roland Barthes theory of enigma codes. The high heels represent maturity now, and the white soles of her shoes can be interpreted as if she is stepping all over her innocent personality before, that she has completely forgot herself now and is now letting go of her old self by being above it and keeping it beneath her. The fur coat also signifies she is cold hearted.

Overall, We was all really impressed with how our character 'Hannah' looked, we throughly planned the idea and it turned out perfect for us. We believe the visual of Hannah's appearance will interest the audience well as it is interesting and different to see this sudden dramatic change in appearance and people will want to know why.
